Family Physician of the Year

Deborah G. Haynes, MD, FAAFP is Honored

Dr. Debbie Haynes of Wichita, Kan., accepted the 2012 Kansas Family Physician of the Year award Friday, June 8th during the President’s Dinner among family, friends and colleagues. “I am so honored to be selected as the Kansas Family Physician of the Year. I am humbled to be added to the prestigious group of physicians previously given this recognition,” Haynes said upon taking the podium.

Here are excerpts from Dr. Haynes’ acceptance speech:

“My journey as a family physician began 36 years ago when I received my acceptance letter from the KU School of Medicine. There are so many memories from then to now, and the highlights were often associated with speeches, elections, or interviews. I reviewed some of my previous Academy speeches and a theme emerged – a theme about serving others

“Hear this quote from William Osler: ‘You arein this profession as a calling not as a business, as a calling which extractsfrom you self-sacrifice, devotion, love, and tenderness to your fellow men.’

“As family physicians, we are blessed to have long-term relationships with ourpatients, our colleagues, and our staff. We have the unique opportunity to carefor entire families, often spanning three or four generations. We are advocatesfor our patients and we help them navigate the pathways of our complex healthcare system.

“I believe we are called to give back and serve communities, and I have been giventhe opportunity to be a teacher, a volunteer, a leader, and a philanthropist. Allof this happened because I had an amazing supportive team at work and home.”

Dr. Haynes thanked her husband Larry and three daughters for their support and love and many others for their service, mentorship and encouragement.

“My dear friend from Wichita State University,Dr. James Rhatigan, wrote, ‘We are not always privileged to know theconsequences of our acts, but we must be attentive to the possibilities theypresent. Small wins can produce results that are electrifying and lifechanging.’”

“This award and this time of looking back on my life as a family physician has givenme the chance to see some of the results of my acts. This award definitelyqualifies as ‘electrifying.’ I am so thankful for your amazing support.”
