Awards & Scholarships

Kansas Academy of Family Physicians supports resident and student success in many ways.  One way is by recognizing residents and students through the following awards.

Carol A Johnson MD Family Medicine International Mission Scholarship

The KAFP-Foundation provides two scholarships to residents in their 2nd or 3rd year of family medicine residency in Kansas who have a heart for in international health care missions. The scholarship amount awarded is $1,500 per recipient. The recipient is recognized at the KAFP Annual Meeting Recognition & Awards Lunch and will briefly describe their mission trip experience during a CME presentation.

The award is named after Carol A. Johnson, MD, a family physician leader in the KAFP and KAFP-Foundation who cared deeply about  international missions. Dr. Johnson died in February 2013.  Generous gifts from family members, colleagues and friends funded an endowment for the scholarship with KAFP-Foundation in her memory.

KAFP-Foundation Hostetter Student Award

One medical student from each University of Kansas School of Medicine campus (Kansas City, Salina and Wichita) is honored with this award in the amount of $500. The recipients are selected by each campus’ Department of Family Medicine. The award is presented at the KAFP Annual Meeting during the Recognition & Awards Lunch.

The KAFP-Foundation Hostetter Award was initiated in 2006 and is named after Dr. Philip Hostetter, a family physician in Manhattan. He was a World War II veteran who wrote a book about his experiences in WWII. He enjoyed photography and was generous with sharing his photographs with KAFP.  He supported KAFP and the Foundation for years, serving as the Academy president in 1975. Dr. Hostetter died in 2005, leaving a share of his estate to the KAFP-Foundation, which allowed the foundation to develop this award in his memory.
