Family Medicine Discovers Rapid Cycle Scientific Discovery and Innovation (FMD RapSDI) is a new signature program launching this fall by the AAFP Foundation in collaboration with the AAFP National Research Network (AAFP NRN). FMD RapSDI is seeking practicing family physicians with little or no research experience to conduct short-term innovative and high-impact projects addressing patient care-inspired or clinical questions or topics. Chapters may wish to share this opportunity with members.

The first application period will open on Oct. 1 and the deadline to apply is Oct. 31, 2019. The second application period deadline is Mar. 1, 2020.

Two physicians will be selected as 2019-2020 FMD RapSDI Scholars. Each will receive a $40,000 grant for project associated costs and/or to offset time required to conduct research. FMD RapSDI scholars will serve as Principal Investigators for their projects and will receive support and mentorship from AAFP NRN to develop and refine a research protocol, perform project activities, and conduct data analysis. Scholars have an opportunity to participate in one or more research conferences/meetings and author a manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal.

The application process will be divided into two competitive rounds. An in-depth description of a research question, protocol document, and budget are not needed in the first-round application.
