Get your Family Doctor of the Day (FDOD) volunteer date on your calendar early and get first pick on dates and get it crossed of your to-do-list now! The 2020 legislative session will be here before you know it! We invite all of our active members and residents with a Kansas license, to serve as the FDOD at the Statehouse during the legislative session.

FDOD is a volunteer program organized by the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians, in which KAFP provides for a family physician to be present at the Statehouse each day during the legislative session. KAFP relies on its trusted membership to volunteer to serve as FDOD.

The FDOD program is an opportunity to network in Topeka, learn about the legislative process, perhaps attend part of a session or committee, and provide a much-appreciated service to legislators on behalf of KAFP.

Volunteers assist legislators and their staff with health needs that may arise throughout the day. Checking blood pressure, distributing ibuprofen, examining sore throats: the health issues are mainly minor health needs, with a few more serious ailments during the year. The legislators are grateful for the program and it definitely puts family medicine in a favorable light!

FDOD volunteers report to the Capitol Building in Topeka at 9:00 a.m. and stay until 3:00 p.m. taking care of legislators, staff and sometimes even visitors who need medical attention.

Thank you for your consideration of taking a day to volunteer for this important program.

All KAFP voting members (active, resident, life members) received an email a few weeks ago from President Sheryl Beard, MD, FAAFP providing notification of a survey that was launched on Aug. 12. The survey seeks the membership’s input on the topic of medical aid in dying/physician-assisted suicide, to provide valuable feedback to our delegates and alternate delegates who will travel to Philadelphia in September for the AAFP’s Congress of Delegates.

To gather unbiased input from the membership, KAFP has contracted with eAutoFeedback, LLC, a third-party independent survey company, to conduct the confidential survey and report back to KAFP’s Board of Directors. All responses will be anonymous and data will be reported only in aggregate.

If you are an active, resident or life member who did not receive the survey request, please check your junk/spam folder for an email from info@kafponline.org. A reminder was sent Monday, Aug. 19, 2019. If it is not there, let us know at info@kafponline.org Thank you for your time and attention on these important matters.

About Amaryllis Sanchez Wohlever, MD

I am the wife of a pilot-turned-preacher, the happy mom of three terrific children, and have been a physician leader for twenty-five years. My life was transformed years ago through a heartfelt prayer. Since then, my work as a physician turned into a ministry as I learned to care for people from the heart. I strive to care for the soul and minister to the spirit while treating the body.

I served as chief resident and as president of the Florida Association of Family Medicine Residents. I have served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians and chair the FAFP Physician Wellness initiative. I am a graduate of the Florida Medical Association Leadership Academy and assisted the 2018 launch of the FMA’s statewide Healthy Living initiative. I am passionate about Helping Docs Thrive™ in the midst of a broken system in constant flux and feel blessed by the many opportunities I have to enhance physician wellness and prevent burnout at the state and national level.
