Meet Tina Khan…

Tina Khan spent 13 years in Dual Language Bilingual Classrooms as a teacher advocate for families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.  The principle stating leadership starts with you is especially near to her work both in and out the classroom. Tina has a Level I Kansas Leadership Center certification in Teaching Leadership and a Level II Case-In-Point certification for group facilitation. She has more than 10 years experience in team training and group facilitation. She has a degree from Kansas State University in K-12 Education and Bilingual/Multicultural licensure as well as an MA in American History and MS in Educational Administration & School Leadership from Emporia State University.

Tina currently works to increase healthy food access for communities across Kansas. Through her work at the Center for Engagement and Community Development at Kansas State University, she was instrumental in establishing the state’s 2nd CDFI (community development financing institute) and only the tenth CDFI in the country that focuses on increasing healthier food access for citizens. She is the current director for the Kansas Alliance for Wellness where she works to develop Food Policy Councils focusing on healthier food access in local communities, through local policy. She is passionate about connecting individuals with resources that benefit the progress of Kansas communities.

She fills her spare time with cycling, outdoor activities, animals and enjoying the beautiful countryside of Lyon County Kansas where she lives with her husband Brandon, their seven dogs, two miniature donkeys and potbelly pig Roscoe. Read more

Be ready for the 2019 Legislative Session and attend Advocacy Day with us on January 30. Be informed about healthcare issues expected to arise in the 2019 Legislative Session. Hot topics include Tobacco 21 and Primary Care Investment. Take notes on how to engage with legislators. Visit the State Capitol to meet with legislators. And finally, hear from legislators themselves who will share their perspectives on the new session.

Directly after the day activities, head over to the Dillon House where there will be cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to meet face-to-face with legislators.

Interested in fighting tobacco to make Kansans stronger, healthier and tobacco-free? Join Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition (TFKC)! View Membership Card.

Membership is free and offers these these benefits:

  • Develop new partnerships thru committee work
  • Inform local coalitions on state tobacco issues
  • Provide expert testimony on state bills
  • Participate in special training opportunities
  • Enhance leadership skills as a Board member

Already a member? Nominations for the South Central Region Representative are currently being accepted. Candidates need to be in good standing with the Coalition and a member of TFKC for at least six months. TFKC has monthly board conference calls, and committee assignments. Attendance is strongly advised for voting abilities. Submit a nomination.

Attend AAFP Leadership Conferences; Apply to Represent KAFP

AAFP has two Leadership Conferences you are encouraged to attend if interested in leadership opportunities! AAFP’s National Conference of Constituency Leaders (NCCL) and AAFP Leadership Conference are both held in Kansas City, Missouri, April 25-27, 2019 (pre-conference April 24).

The Leadership Conference serves as a great orientation for emerging leaders who serve, or who are interested in serving, on the KAFP board or in leadership positions in other organizations. NCCL is the AAFP’s forum to address member issues specific to women, minorities, new physicians, international medical graduates (IMG) and GLBT physicians. The KAFP is seeking representatives from the following categories to attend: IMG, new physician, women, and minorities. By Board policy, KAFP will reimburse designated representatives to attend. Welcome to 2019 Legislative Session

The 2019 Kansas Legislative Session started yesterday, January 14!  Join us in welcoming Governor Kelly and a new House of Representatives. There will be opportunities to improve the health of Kansans as well as challenges to previous gains. Please join us in actively supporting and promoting these initiatives that put the health of Kansans first! As an advocate, you will receive email updates “Legislative Update” on the progress of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians legislative efforts by KAFP Government Relations Liaison Dodie Wellshear.  You may be asked to take action via email, phone calls, and visits with your legislators. Together, we will make a difference in the lives of Kansans.  There are three things you can do to help us have a successful legislative session:

2019 Legislative Session Begins January 14

KAFP

The legislative session is right around the corner!  The legislative session kicks off January 14 with President Jeremy Presley, MD, FAAFP serving as the Family Doctor of the Day (FDOD) for the first two days. We invite all of our active members (including residents) with a Kansas license, to serve as the FDOD at the Statehouse during the legislative session. Please check your calendars and see if you are available.

FDOD volunteers report to the Capitol Building in Topeka at 9:00 a.m. and stay until 3:00 p.m. taking care of legislators, staff and sometimes even visitors who need medical attention.
