The Board hired incoming Executive Vice President, Tarah Remington Brown, to allow EVP Carolyn Gaughan, CAE, to retire at the end of the summer. The transition has been in progress since May 13, 2019. Carolyn’s last day coming to the office daily is Friday, June 28. She will use accumulated vacation and leave days through most of July and August, and plans to be in the office only occasionally. Tarah will take over more responsibility during the transition. Carolyn’s last official day as EVP is August 31, 2019. As part of the transition, Carolyn will no longer monitor the e-mail kafp@kafponline.org after Friday, June 28. After Friday, all e-mail sent to that address will receive an auto-reply message directing the sender to others within the organization. We hope you will join us for a retirement party for Carolyn on Wednesday, August 28 from 4 – 6 p.m. at the KU School of Medicine – Wichita.  Further details to come!

The 2019 Reference Committee recommendations were announced and members were heard at the Member Meeting on Friday, June 7 during the KAFP Annual Meeting at the Wichita Marriott. The Board discussed and took  action on the resolutions at its Board meeting on Saturday, June 8. Three of the resolutions involved the topic of medical aid in dying / physician-assisted suicide and there was impassioned testimony at the Board meeting from widely differing perspectives. The Board intends to conduct a survey this summer to gain a better understanding of members’ attitudes and opinions on the related topics.  Download the full Board Action on 2019 Reference Committee Report on Resolutions.  Please note that this document is a draft until the Board meets at its fall meeting to adopt the June 8, 2019 minutes.

The Kansas Supreme Court recently issued a ruling (Hilburn v. Enerpipe, LTD) that will impact physicians, hospitals, and ultimately Kansas patients. The Court ruled that the state laws limiting non-economic damages (i.e. damages for pain and suffering) in civil cases are now unconstitutional. The ruling was a surprise to the legal community and reverses the Court’s 2012 decision in Miller v. Johnson which upheld the cap’s constitutionality. The Kansas Academy of Family Physicians (KAFP) condemns the potential effects of this ruling and last week sent an e-mail to membership regarding the impact. Read the letter.
