Elections for KAFP District Directors are conducted by U.S. Mail ballot. This year, directors in districts 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 are up for election. Click here to view district boundaries. During this year’s KAFP Member Meeting, Friday, June 15, members will elect Secretary, Treasurer, Delegate and Alternate Delegates to the KAFP Board of Directors. The election will be conducted in person during the Annual Meeting  at the Overland Park Marriott Hotel in Overland Park on Friday, June 15 during the Member Meeting. You must be present to vote. Get to know your candidates before the big day.

This is a great opportunity for you to make your recommendations to KAFP to change or support a topic important to you. Resolutions are the official means by which you as a member have input into the Academy’s governance and political process. Resolutions are not difficult to write. If you have a topic or resolution you’re interested in writing, but get stuck in the process, please don’t stop there– Contact KAFP! We can provide samples from years past, and will be happy to guide you through the process of writing your resolution. We are here to help you!

The official resolution process, adopted by the KAFP Board of Directors, is as follows:

  • A note in the April and May Weekly e-newsletters will announce that resolutions are due by Monday, May 14, 2018.  Late resolutions may be introduced at the discretion of the Reference Committee Chair, the senior Delegate (Dr. Jen Brull).
  • The staff will follow-up with those who author resolutions, providing them with a copy of this process and the timeline for consideration of resolutions.
  • In the KAFP Weekly e-Newsletter around May 22, we will publish the proposed resolutions, inviting those with an interest in them to contact KAFP with their input.
  • The Reference Committee will be made up of Delegates, Alternates, and officers.
  • On May 31 at 12: 15 p.m. the Reference Committee will hold a hearing by conference call, and inviting the authors of resolutions to participate if they so desire. The committee will go through new resolutions and ones considered for sunset, and make recommendations for the Board.
  • The resolutions will be made available to conference attendees, either in the conference manual or in a separate format.
  • The Board will consider all resolutions at its board meeting, Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting.

Congratulations to Belinda Vail, MD, FAAFP who was officially named Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Kansas City.

Dr. Vail is Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine. Dr. Vail graduated and received her residency training from the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine. She later completed a fellowship in Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA and a fellowship at the AAFP National Institute for Program Director Development, Leawood, Kansas.

Her clinical practice includes procedures and maternity and inpatient care, and she teaches students in all four years of medical school, nurse practitioner students, and residents during all of these clinical activities. She is also an active didactic teacher in the schools of medicine and nursing and in the residency program. Dr. Vail is Medical Director for Community Living Opportunities, a residential facility for developmentally disabled adults, and participates in oversight for the Kansas Department of Corrections and for the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability.

She is a core lecturer for several CME programs for the American Academy of Family Physicians, was the director of the National Board Review Course for 15 years, and continues to present in the AAFP Board Review Express course.  A member of AOA, the Gold Humanism Society, and the Delp Society, her awards include the Rainbow Award for Heroes in Medicine, the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians Exemplary Teaching Award, The Nason Family Award for Excellence in Teaching in Family Medicine, and the University of Kansas Bohan Award for Teaching.
